The meaning of value. Seems a bit ironic don’t you think? But this is something I have been attempting to wrap my head around and explain without being didactic. Some may think it’s a matter of semantics, but I think it’s important to really define what we mean when we use the word.
Many social media professionals use the word “value” to describe their work in their communities. Creating or adding “value” are phrases that are often used in social media. But “what does this word really mean in the context of social media?
Value- a. relative worth, merit, or importance:
b. the worth of something in terms of the amount of other things for which it can be exchanged or in terms of some medium of exchange.
If we apply this definition to social media two ideas conjure for me:
- That value is creating a level of importance for audience members. The content you post is important to you and your sharing of this content through social media creates visibility of the content to your audience. Value as being equal to producing merit is one example of defining value in social media.
- A second approach or perspective for the meaning of value I believe is a step above the first definition and is the actual exchange of ideas between you and the community. If we take the second definition of value, it is easy to see how value is created through the conversations within your community, which includes your audience and other influencers. The ideas that are exchanged creates value by supporting and challenging ideas and content that you present. The agreeing (or disagreeing) and engagement of your brand’s content creates value for that content and ultimately your brand’s visibility.
What does value mean to you?
